Visit a Sommerbad

Sommerbads are outdoor swimming pools that open up specifically in the summer months and are a favorite of visitors and locals alike as soon as the weather gets warm. Berlin has many of these polls around the city, providing a retreat to cool off as temperatures climb. While many of the pools are unique and offer an excellent place to enjoy a sunny day, our favorite is Sommerbad Wuhlheide.

This perfect summer location features 3 different pools, with one dedicated to small children. The pool has 2 big slides, including one with an elephant theme that is sure to delight visitors. In addition to swimming, the Sommerbad has a big park and playground area for children to run around once they are done in the pool.

The Sommerbad Wuhlheide is a perfect spot to enjoy the summer and is often less crowded compared to the other pools in the city. Even with the smaller crowds, we recommend buying tickets online so you don’t get stuck in a long queue, especially on the weekends. If you want to enjoy some food on your visit, there is a small café directly at the Sommerbad, but you can also bring your own food, packing a picnic for the adventure. If you do bring bags or larger items, remember to bring your own local along, and don’t forget sunscreen and a change of clothes.

Address: Sommerbad Wuhleheide, Trekowallee 211, 12459 Berlin.

Have fun at one of the many Wasserspielplatz or Plansche

The playground and park are always great family outings in every season, but they become even better in the summer, especially when they include a Wasserspielplatz. Luckily Berlin has plenty of great playgrounds featuring water features and places to splash and play. While many have their own unique attractions and themes, our favorite is Der Wasserspielplatz Plansche im Plänterwald.

Originally built as a forest pool, the remaining outline and stone sculptures still exist at this modernized splash pad that will definitely be a hit with the entire family. The Wasserspielplatz offers a great location to run, splash, and play in the forest. In addition to the splash pad, children will also find lots more to enjoy, including seesaws, climbing areas, and a mud play area.

The area is easily accessible by public transport, and entrance to the Wasserspielplatz is free. Come prepared with water shoes to avoid hot or slippery areas of the park, and to make the most of your visit, bring food along and enjoy relaxing on the nearby benches or shaded grassy areas.

Address: Der Wasserspielplatz Plansche im Plänterwald, Dammweg 1c, 12057 Berlin.

If you are looking for another Wasserspielplatz to cool down on a warm summer day, we also highly recommend the Wasserspielplatz at Spielplatz Stefan-Heym-Platz, this small playground on the corner of Möllendorffstrasse and Frankfurter Allee is easy to reach and close to the city center. The playground offers a fun place for children to explore including a Wasserspielplatz perfect for children to splash and play right at its center.

Take a swim at the lake at Strandbar Disati

Nothing says a perfect summer day like a visit to one of Berlin’s many lakes. The opportunity to play on the shore and swim in the cool lake water truly makes for a great day of family fun. With so many lakes to choose from throughout the city, it can be a difficult decision when planning your visit. For your next summer lake day, we highly recommend visiting the Strandbar Disati, and enjoying a swim at the lake there.

Strandbar Disati

Not your typical lake visit, Strandbar Disati is a small bar and cafe offering food, drinks, and regularly scheduled events on the shore of Werlsee. A sandy beach with lots to do, a visit to the Strandbar means swimming and playing in the water, as well as a chance to visit the climbing forest perfect for children ages 8-11. The location has space to enjoy the sun, or sit in the shade under the forest trees.

Strandbar Disati is located near Berlin and is reachable by public transport. We recommend packing a beach bag with everything you will need for the day and a change of clothes if you will want to do a climbing adventure. If a weekday visit is possible, we recommend it, as it can get pretty crowded on the weekend with lots of families enjoying the lively beach location.

Address: Strandbar Disati, Feldstraße 3, 15537 Grünheide (Mark)

Take a walk in the forest

While many summer days call for spending days by the water, another great option to enjoy the weather and spend family time outside is a nature walk in one of the many parks or forests in and around Berlin. Enjoy time in the quiet among the trees offering a beautiful backdrop to a perfect summer activity for the whole family.

The forest around Waldspielplatz

Berlin offers lots of beautiful places to enjoy nature. For the perfect forest walk to enjoy the summer, our favorite might be in Plänterwald. With large trees to keep cool and shade from the sun, the paths at Plänterwald are a perfect place for a walk with the entire family, including pets. We love the natural surrounding and highly recommend a stop at the Waldspielplatz, one of our favorite playgrounds, in one of our favorite places.

The forest can be reached by Sbahn and offers lots of places to walk and relax or visit the playground, which might be busier during the summer months. Don’t forget to pack a snack for your adventure as well as lots of water and sunscreen for the day.

Visit a family farm

Enjoy a warm summer day by venturing outside the city to experience some unique outdoor activities. As the weather warms up, visits to local farms can be a great trip, with activities ranging from petting zoos to berry picking. Whatever you chose to do, it’s sure to be a day to make great family memories.

We enjoy spending time outside and love a good outdoor activity or adventure. Some of our favorites are just outside Berlin and include the farm Pinke Panke which offers a petting zoo as well as lots of other activities and educational events for children throughout the year. Summer is a great time to visit and enjoy the bustling farm.

Another favorite farm activity is Strawberry picking. With so many locations just outside Berlin, it’s hard to pick a favorite. Each farm offers the opportunity to pick your own strawberries while experiencing a real working farm. Most farms also have other activities to enjoy, including farm shops, playgrounds, or even a corn maze making for an entire day of fun with something for everyone.

If you are looking for a petting zoo closer to the city, we also recommend Tierpark, which additionally features a Wasserspielplatz perfect for a full summer day.

Address: Kinderbauernhof Pinke-Panke, Am Bürgerpark 15-18, 13156 Berlin
